Blog – Insuring your pub: where to start
When it comes to insuring your bar, pub, or club – it’s essential that you get specialist business insurance tailored specifically to the risk that pub-owners come face-to-face with daily. Taking out commercial insurance isn’t as easy as insuring your house or your car – so we recommend speaking to an advisor or broker who will ensure that you get the right cover for you. To start you off, we have created a brief guide to all things pub insurance – with the hope of giving you a good starting point.
What venues class under the ‘pub’ umbrella?
Different insurance companies all class pubs differently – but as a rule of thumb, you will be placed into one of the below categories:
- Public houses
- Wine bars
- Late licensed pubs and bars
- Late night venues / Nightclubs
- Function venues (country clubs, etc.)
- Any other licensed venue
Next, it is important to understand the different types of insurance which are available for you.
Building Insurance
This insure type does what it says on the tin – and will insure you for any damages that are caused to your buildings. If you are a tenant and renting out the property from a commercial landlord – then it is their responsibility to take out building insurance (but it is important to always double-check, first).
Content Insurance
So, content insurance is split up into two different sections: the contents for the pub itself (including fixtures, fittings, equipment, stock, etc.) and tenant’s content (taken out for landlords/tenants if they wish to insure any personal belongings).
Public Liability
Public liability covers you in the event of accidental injury to any person on your site, or any loss/damage to personal belongings whilst on the pub’s property. This gives you the ability to provide a cover of up to £5,000,000.
Employers Liability
Alike to the public liability insurance-type, employers’ liability also covers you for accidental injury and loss of belongings – but this time concerning your employees. This cover can provide up to £10,000,000.
Finally, we want to give you some quick top tips which can help you get the best quote in relation to your pubs’ insurance:
- Ensure you have CCTV fitted throughout your property – this could potentially attract discount with some insurers
- Note your experience – landlords with more experience, as a rule of thumb, may be entitled to cheaper insure than those who have just started in the industry.
- Always remember to mention any entertainment that will be going on within your pub – as this could also affect the rate of insurance that you receive.
- Finally, don’t go at it alone! Contact an insurance broker/advisor that you can trust – and they will guide you on the right path.
